NICU- Day 2

We arrived back at 9. The nurse was in and told us that everything looked great and that Jack could start eating today and that Abby could tomorrow. She put an outfit on Jack (he can regulate temp without help) but said that he was looking a little jaundice and if he had to go under the light, the outfit would come off. He took his first two bottles okay. He is a little uncoordinated but handled it. The last two meals we were there for were given through his tube (they eat on a 8, 11, 2, 5 schedule). He also decided that he would christian my hand, his outfit and bedding not once but twice today. He also bleed a little when the nurse did the evening assessment but he was getting too warm so we kept cloths off of him. He is doing wonderful and only lost 5oz today.

I was able to give Abby her bath (in the incubator) and afterward we did kangaroo care for 90 minutes. After that she had had enough and wanted to go back to the incubator. When she was put back in they put her on the sun lamp because she is jaundice, but they think it should just be for the day. The doctor came back in a little later and told me that the ultrasound on Abby's brain looked great and was normal, but the kidney showed cysts. They are consulting a specialist on Monday and will do more test to see exactly what is going on. Luckily she is my little trooper and defying all the odds and early diagnosis. She had to have a picc line put in, but it went great and is just so they don't have to stick her as often and mess up her tiny veins. She did lose an ounce today but that was to be expected and I was happily allowed to hold her for another hour tonight while she was awake!

Heading to bed. We are getting down a routine of 9-9. This forces us to get rest and it is quiet during the night so feel comfortable not missing anything. AND the birth announcement was in the paper today and said Chris and Sally Long, twins. :D We sign the papers Monday and things are going great. The bm is doing well (ran a small temp today but nothing major) and the twins are defying the odds given before birth. God is good!

  1. This all sounds so great. I'm so glad you're getting to do kangaroo care. Do it as often as they'll let you and keep demanding more skin-to-skin time. It'll help them get big and strong and help you with bonding. Chris, too, if he's comfortable with it.

Jaundice is common, but I'm sure you know that. If you can hold them near a window so they get some diffused sunshine, that will help (in addition to needing time under the bili-light).

Does Jack have a good suck? Do you think you're going to need to teach Abby to suck? Their weights sound so good, and Jack will turn around and start his gain in no time!
